Trachyphyllia spp., commonly known as Open Brain Coral, is a stunning large polyp stony (LPS) coral prized for its vibrant colours and unique fleshy polyps. This Master Grade specimen in an Extra Extra Large size offers a bold and eye-catching addition to mature reef aquariums.
Care Level: Moderate – best suited for aquarists with some experience in LPS coral husbandry.
Lighting: Moderate lighting is recommended, such as LED or T5 fixtures providing a PAR range of 50-150. Avoid intense direct light to prevent bleaching.
Water Flow: Low to moderate, indirect water movement is ideal to ensure the coral’s delicate tissue is not damaged while promoting healthy gas exchange.
Placement: Position on the substrate or lower rockwork where it can expand fully without competition. Provide ample space around the coral to prevent aggression or stinging from neighbouring corals.
Diet: Primarily photosynthetic via symbiotic zooxanthellae, but benefits from supplemental feeding of meaty foods such as mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, or specialised coral foods 1-2 times weekly.
Compatibility: Reef safe with adequate spacing. Avoid placing near aggressive corals that may extend sweeper tentacles.
Origin: Not Provided.
Maximum Size: Variable, but specimens can reach up to 30cm or more in diameter under optimal conditions.
Minimum Tank Size: 150 litres recommended to provide stable water parameters and sufficient space.
Regular water changes, stable parameters, and maintaining calcium, alkalinity, and magnesium within recommended ranges will support healthy growth and vibrant colours.
