Trachyphyllia spp., commonly known as Open Brain Coral, is a captivating Large Polyp Stony (LPS) coral prized for its fleshy, vibrant polyps and striking appearance. Our Master Grade Extra Large specimens represent the finest quality, showcasing intense colouration and robust health, making them a prized addition to mature reef aquariums.
Care Level: Moderate – suitable for aquarists with some experience in LPS coral husbandry.
Lighting Requirements: Trachyphyllia spp. thrive under moderate lighting conditions. Avoid intense direct light to prevent bleaching; LED or T5 lighting systems with adjustable intensity are ideal.
Water Flow: Provide low to moderate, indirect water flow. Strong currents can cause tissue damage, while gentle flow helps maintain coral health by removing detritus and delivering nutrients.
Placement: Position on the substrate or lower rockwork where it can expand fully without competition. Ensure adequate spacing from neighbouring corals to prevent aggression and tissue damage.
Diet: While photosynthetic, Trachyphyllia spp. benefit from supplemental feeding. Offer meaty foods such as mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, or specialised coral foods 1–2 times weekly to promote growth and vibrancy.
Compatibility & Reef Safety: Reef safe with adequate spacing. Avoid placing near aggressive corals that may sting or overshadow it.
Origin & Size: Origin not provided. This Extra Large Master Grade coral can reach substantial sizes in optimal conditions, adding impressive visual impact to your reef tank.
Additional Notes: Maintain stable water parameters typical for reef aquaria: temperature 24–26°C, salinity 1.025–1.026, calcium 400–450 ppm, alkalinity 8–12 dKH, and magnesium 1250–1350 ppm. Regular water changes and monitoring will support long-term health.
