Thalassoma rueppellii, commonly known as the large wrasse, is a colourful and active fish native to the Red Sea and adjacent waters. This species is prized for its vibrant hues and dynamic swimming behaviour, making it a captivating addition to a mature marine aquarium.
Care Level: Moderate to advanced. This wrasse requires stable water conditions and a well-established tank.
Temperament: Generally semi-aggressive. It can be territorial, especially towards similar-sized or shaped fish, so careful selection of tank mates is advised.
Diet: Carnivorous. Feed a varied diet including high-quality frozen or live foods such as mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, and finely chopped seafood. Supplement with marine pellets or flakes formulated for carnivorous fish.
Minimum Tank Size: At least 180 litres (approximately 50 gallons) to provide ample swimming space and reduce territorial disputes.
Lighting Requirements: Standard marine aquarium lighting is sufficient; no special lighting needs.
Water Flow: Moderate water movement mimicking natural reef currents is ideal.
Placement: Mid to lower levels of the aquarium. Provide plenty of live rock for hiding and foraging.
Reef Compatibility: With Caution. May prey on small invertebrates and fish; not recommended for delicate reef tanks with small or sessile invertebrates.
Origin: Native to the Red Sea and nearby regions.
Maximum Size: Up to 25 cm (10 inches) in length.
Ensure a secure lid on the aquarium as wrasses are known jumpers. Regular water changes and stable water parameters will help maintain health and vibrancy.
