Synanceia verrucosa, commonly known as the Stonefish, is one of the most venomous fish species found in marine aquariums. This extra large specimen is suited only for experienced aquarists due to its specialised care requirements and potent venom.
Temperament and Compatibility: Stonefish are ambush predators with a generally sedentary nature. They are best kept singly in a species-specific or predator-focused aquarium. Due to their venomous spines and predatory behaviour, they are incompatible with most tankmates and should not be housed with small or slow-moving fish.
Diet: This species is carnivorous, feeding primarily on live or frozen meaty foods such as fish, shrimp, and crustaceans. Regular feeding with high-quality protein sources is essential to maintain health.
Tank Requirements: A minimum tank size of 300 litres is recommended to provide adequate space and stable water parameters. The aquarium should have a sandy or rubble substrate with plenty of rockwork for camouflage and ambush hunting. Water quality must be maintained at high standards with stable temperature (24-28°C), salinity (1.020-1.025 SG), and good filtration.
Handling and Safety: Extreme caution is advised when maintaining this species due to its venomous dorsal spines. Use appropriate tools and avoid direct contact.
Origin: Native to the Indo-Pacific region, including coral reefs and coastal areas.
