Overview: The Sun Anemone (Stichodactyla helianthus) is a captivating species native to the Caribbean, including Cuba. Known for its vibrant colours and large oral disc, it is a prized addition to marine aquariums. This anemone is available in various sizes to suit different tank setups.
Care Level: Moderate. This species requires stable water parameters and consistent feeding to maintain health.
Feeding: While Stichodactyla helianthus harbours symbiotic zooxanthellae and benefits from moderate lighting, it also requires supplemental feeding. Offer meaty foods such as mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, or finely chopped seafood 2-3 times per week to support growth and vitality.
Compatibility and Reef Safety: Reef safe with caution. This anemone can host certain clownfish species but may sting nearby corals or invertebrates. Provide adequate space to prevent aggression or damage to neighbouring livestock.
Lighting and Water Flow: Moderate lighting is recommended to support its symbiotic algae without causing stress. Water flow should be moderate to gentle, ensuring the anemone’s tentacles can move freely without being blasted.
Placement: Place the Sun Anemone on a stable rock or sandy substrate where it can attach securely. Avoid areas with strong currents or direct intense lighting.
Tank Size: A minimum tank size of 75 litres (20 gallons) is advised to provide sufficient space and stable water conditions.
Origin: Cuba, Caribbean Sea.
Maximum Size: Up to 30 cm (12 inches) oral disc diameter in captivity.
