Spirobranchus spp., often referred to as Christmas Tree Worms, are captivating marine polychaete worms prized for their distinctive, spiral-shaped feeding appendages that resemble colourful Christmas trees. These sedentary worms are typically found embedded in live rock and coral skeletons, making them a natural and attractive addition to reef aquariums.
Care Level: Moderate care is recommended, as these worms require stable water parameters and appropriate flow to thrive.
Lighting Requirements: Moderate lighting is ideal. While they do not rely on photosynthesis, lighting helps maintain the health of the surrounding live rock and microfauna.
Water Flow: Gentle to moderate water flow is essential to facilitate feeding by delivering plankton and particulate matter to their radioles.
Placement: Place the live rock with Spirobranchus spp. in a location with stable conditions, avoiding areas of strong direct flow or intense lighting. Ensure adequate spacing from aggressive corals to prevent damage to their delicate feeding structures.
Diet: These worms are filter feeders, consuming plankton and suspended organic particles. Supplementary feeding with phytoplankton or liquid coral foods can support their nutritional needs.
Compatibility and Reef Safety: Spirobranchus spp. are reef safe and compatible with most peaceful reef inhabitants. However, avoid housing them with predatory fish or invertebrates that may nip at their delicate radioles.
Additional Notes: As these worms are often sourced from wild or mixed origins, conservative husbandry practices are advised. Monitor water quality closely and maintain stable parameters to ensure longevity.
