Siganus virgatus, commonly known as the foxface rabbitfish, is a visually stunning addition to any marine aquarium. This extra large specimen displays the characteristic bold yellow and black markings that make it a favourite among marine enthusiasts.
Known for its peaceful temperament, the Siganus virgatus is compatible with a wide range of tank mates, making it suitable for community reef tanks. It is an excellent herbivore, naturally grazing on algae and helping to maintain a balanced aquarium environment.
Care and Husbandry:
- Diet: Primarily herbivorous; provide a varied diet including marine algae, seaweed sheets, and high-quality herbivore pellets or flakes. Supplement with occasional meaty foods such as mysis or brine shrimp.
- Temperament: Generally peaceful but may display territorial behaviour towards conspecifics or similar species. Best kept singly or as a mated pair in larger tanks.
- Minimum Tank Size: A minimum of 200 litres (approximately 50 gallons) is recommended to provide ample swimming space and reduce stress.
- Water Parameters: Maintain stable marine conditions with temperature between 24-27°C, salinity at 1.020-1.025 SG, pH 8.1-8.4, and moderate water flow.
- Placement: Provide plenty of live rock for grazing and shelter. Open swimming areas are essential for this active species.
Additional Notes: The Siganus virgatus possesses venomous spines as a defence mechanism; handle with care during maintenance. This species is considered reef safe with caution, as it may nip at soft corals or clam mantles.
