Siganus argenteus, commonly referred to as the Silver Foxface, is a visually striking rabbitfish known for its distinctive silver body and fox-like facial markings. This small variant is well-suited for marine aquarium enthusiasts seeking a peaceful, herbivorous fish that contributes to natural algae control.
Temperament and Compatibility: The Silver Foxface is generally peaceful and can be kept with a variety of community fish. However, it may display territorial behaviour towards conspecifics or similar species. It is reef safe with caution, as it may nip at soft corals or clam mantles occasionally.
Diet: Primarily herbivorous, Siganus argenteus thrives on a diet rich in marine algae and seaweed. Supplement with high-quality herbivore pellets, flakes, and occasional meaty foods to ensure balanced nutrition.
Tank Requirements: A minimum tank size of 120 litres (approximately 30 gallons) is recommended to provide ample swimming space and reduce territorial stress. Maintain stable water parameters typical of a tropical marine environment: temperature 24-27°C, pH 8.1-8.4, and salinity 1.020-1.025 SG.
Care Level: Moderate. Suitable for aquarists with some experience in marine fish care.
Additional Notes: Provide plenty of live rock for grazing and hiding spots. Regular water changes and good filtration are essential to maintain water quality. Handle with care due to venomous spines which can cause painful wounds.
