Scolymia australis, commonly called the Bleeding Apple, is a captivating large polyp stony (LPS) coral prized for its vivid colours and distinctive fleshy appearance. This large specimen is a spectacular focal point in mature reef aquariums.
Lighting: Moderate lighting is recommended to maintain vibrant colours without causing stress. LED or T5 lighting systems with a PAR range of 50-150 are suitable.
Water Flow: Low to moderate water flow is ideal to ensure the coral’s delicate tissues are not damaged while promoting healthy gas exchange and nutrient delivery.
Placement: Position the Bleeding Apple coral on the substrate or lower rockwork with ample space around it. It requires at least 10cm clearance from neighbouring corals to prevent aggressive interactions due to its sweeper tentacles.
Diet: While primarily photosynthetic via symbiotic zooxanthellae, this coral benefits from supplemental feeding of meaty foods such as mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, or specialised coral foods 1-2 times per week.
Compatibility and Reef Safety: Reef safe with caution. It can exhibit aggressive behaviour towards nearby corals, so adequate spacing is essential to avoid damage.
Care Level: Moderate. Best suited for aquarists with some experience in maintaining LPS corals.
Minimum Tank Size: 75 litres (20 gallons) recommended to provide stable water parameters and space.
Regular water changes, stable calcium, alkalinity, and magnesium levels, along with consistent monitoring of water quality, will ensure the health and longevity of your Bleeding Apple coral.
