Overview: The Squirrelfish (Sargocentron caudimaculatum) is a visually captivating nocturnal species prized for its bright red body and distinctive black spot on the tail. Native to Indo-Pacific reefs, it is a popular choice for marine aquarium enthusiasts seeking a unique and active fish for their collection.
Care Level: Moderate to advanced. This species requires stable water parameters and a well-established tank with plenty of hiding places.
Temperament and Compatibility: Generally peaceful but territorial towards conspecifics and similar species. Best kept singly or in a large tank with ample space. Compatible with other semi-aggressive or peaceful fish but avoid small, timid species that may be stressed.
Diet: Carnivorous. Feed a varied diet of meaty foods such as mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, chopped seafood, and specialised carnivore pellets. Feeding should be done in the evening to match their nocturnal activity.
Tank Requirements: Minimum tank size is 180 litres (approximately 50 gallons) to provide sufficient swimming space and territory. Provide rockwork and caves to mimic natural crevices for shelter during daylight hours.
Lighting and Water Flow: Moderate lighting is preferred to simulate natural reef conditions. Moderate water flow is ideal to ensure oxygenation without stressing the fish.
Origin: Indo-Pacific region.
Maximum Size: Up to 20 cm (approximately 8 inches) in length.
Additional Notes: This species is primarily nocturnal and may be shy during the day. Ensure the aquarium has plenty of shaded areas and caves. Regular water quality monitoring is essential to maintain optimal health.
