The Rhinecanthus aculeatus, commonly referred to as the Picasso Triggerfish, is a visually stunning species prized for its bold, geometric colour patterns and active behaviour. This medium-sized fish is a popular choice among marine aquarium enthusiasts who have experience managing semi-aggressive species.
Care Level: Moderate to Advanced. This species requires stable water parameters and a well-maintained aquarium.
Temperament and Compatibility: The Picasso Triggerfish is known for its territorial and semi-aggressive nature. It is best housed with robust tank mates that can tolerate occasional assertiveness. Avoid keeping with small, timid fish or invertebrates that may be harassed or eaten.
Diet: Omnivorous. Provide a varied diet including meaty foods such as mysis shrimp, krill, chopped seafood, and high-quality marine pellets or flakes to ensure balanced nutrition.
Tank Requirements: A minimum tank size of 120 litres is recommended to provide ample swimming space and territory. The aquarium should include plenty of live rock for hiding and grazing, with secure lids as triggerfish are known jumpers.
Reef Compatibility: With Caution. While not strictly reef safe, this species may coexist with hardy corals but will likely prey on small invertebrates and crustaceans.
Lighting and Water Flow: Standard marine aquarium lighting and moderate water flow are suitable. Ensure good water quality with regular maintenance.
Origin: Indo-Pacific region.
Maximum Size: Up to 25 cm (10 inches) in length.
