Pseudanthias flavicauda, commonly known as the Yellowtail Anthias, is a visually stunning marine fish prized for its vibrant colours and peaceful nature. The male displays particularly striking hues, making it a popular choice for mature reef aquariums.
This species thrives best in well-established tanks with plenty of swimming space and live rock for shelter. They are social fish that do well in small groups or harems, but care should be taken to maintain appropriate tank size and stocking levels to reduce stress.
Care and Husbandry
- Temperament: Peaceful and social, suitable for community reef tanks.
- Diet: Carnivorous; requires a varied diet including high-quality frozen mysis, brine shrimp, and specialised pellet or flake foods formulated for anthias.
- Minimum Tank Size: 180 litres (approximately 50 gallons) recommended to provide adequate swimming space.
- Water Parameters: Stable marine conditions with temperature 24-27°C, salinity 1.023-1.025, pH 8.1-8.4.
- Lighting & Flow: Moderate lighting and moderate water flow to mimic natural reef environments.
- Compatibility: Reef safe with caution; generally compatible with other peaceful fish but avoid aggressive tankmates.
Regular feeding multiple times per day is advised to maintain health and vibrant colouration. Quarantine new specimens to prevent disease introduction. This species is best suited to intermediate to advanced aquarists due to its specific care requirements.
