Pomacanthus xanthometopon, commonly known as the juvenile Yellowface Angelfish, is a captivating addition to any large marine aquarium. Juveniles display a striking pattern of blue and yellow markings that evolve as they mature, making them a visually dynamic species.
Care Level: Moderate to advanced. This species requires stable water conditions and a well-established tank.
Temperament: Generally semi-aggressive. Suitable tank mates include other robust fish, but caution is advised with smaller or more passive species.
Diet: Omnivorous. Provide a varied diet including marine algae, spirulina, mysis shrimp, and specialised angelfish preparations to ensure optimal health.
Minimum Tank Size: At least 250 litres (approximately 65 gallons) to accommodate their active swimming and territorial behaviour.
Reef Safety: With Caution. May nip at sessile invertebrates such as corals and clam mantles; not recommended for sensitive reef tanks.
Lighting and Water Flow: Standard marine aquarium lighting and moderate water flow are suitable. Ensure good water quality with regular maintenance.
Placement: Provide ample live rock for grazing and hiding spots to reduce stress and territorial disputes.
Origin: Indo-Pacific region.
Maximum Size: Up to 38 cm (15 inches) in length.
Due to their size and temperament, Pomacanthus xanthometopon juveniles are best suited for experienced marine aquarists with large, well-maintained systems. Regular observation and a varied diet will help maintain vibrant colours and robust health.
