Pomacanthus paru, commonly known as the French Angelfish, is a spectacular addition to large marine aquariums. This XXL specimen displays the characteristic bold black and yellow patterning that matures with age, making it a visually stunning centerpiece fish.
Care Level: Due to its size and specific care requirements, Pomacanthus paru is recommended for experienced marine aquarists. It demands a well-maintained environment with stable water parameters.
Temperament and Compatibility: Pomacanthus paru is semi-aggressive and can be territorial, especially in smaller tanks or when housed with other angelfish. It is best kept singly or with other robust species that can tolerate its assertive nature. Avoid housing with very small or timid fish.
Diet: This species is omnivorous, requiring a varied diet including marine algae, sponges, and high-quality meaty foods such as mysis shrimp and finely chopped seafood. Supplementing with marine angelfish-specific prepared foods is beneficial.
Tank Requirements: A minimum tank size of 300 litres (approximately 80 gallons) is recommended to provide ample swimming space and reduce territorial behaviour. The aquarium should feature plenty of live rock for grazing and hiding places.
Water Parameters: Maintain stable marine conditions with temperature between 24-27°C, salinity at 1.023-1.025 SG, pH 8.1-8.4, and moderate water flow.
Reef Compatibility: Pomacanthus paru is With Caution in reef tanks as it may nip at corals and sessile invertebrates. Careful monitoring is advised if housed in reef setups.
Origin: Native to the western Atlantic Ocean, including the Caribbean Sea and Gulf of Mexico.
Maximum Size: Can grow up to 45 cm (18 inches) in captivity.
