Pictichromis paccagnellae, commonly known as the Royal Dottyback, is a popular choice among marine aquarium enthusiasts due to its vivid purple and yellow colours and relatively peaceful nature compared to other dottybacks.
Care Level: Moderate – suitable for hobbyists with some marine aquarium experience.
Temperament: Semi-aggressive. While generally peaceful with other fish, it can be territorial towards conspecifics and similar-shaped species.
Diet: Carnivorous. Accepts a variety of meaty foods including frozen mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, and high-quality marine pellets or flakes.
Minimum Tank Size: 75 litres (20 gallons) recommended to provide sufficient territory and swimming space.
Reef Compatibility: With Caution. Generally considered reef safe but may prey on small invertebrates such as shrimp and small crabs.
Lighting and Water Flow: Standard reef aquarium lighting and moderate water flow are suitable.
Placement: Provide plenty of hiding places with live rock to establish territories and reduce stress.
Origin: Western Pacific Ocean, including Indonesia and the Philippines.
Maximum Size: Up to 7 cm (approximately 3 inches).
When introducing Pictichromis paccagnellae to your aquarium, it is advisable to add it last to minimise territorial disputes. Regular water changes and stable water parameters will ensure optimal health and vibrant colouration.
