Perna viridis, commonly known as the Green Mussel, is a medium-sized bivalve mollusc prized for its natural filtration abilities and distinctive appearance in marine aquariums. Sold in clusters, these mussels can enhance water quality by filtering suspended particles and contribute to a balanced reef environment.
Care and Husbandry: Perna viridis requires stable water parameters typical of reef aquariums, including a temperature range of 24-27°C, salinity of 1.023-1.025 SG, and pH between 8.1 and 8.4. Moderate water flow is ideal to ensure adequate food delivery without causing stress. Lighting should be moderate, as these mussels do not rely on photosynthesis but benefit from a natural day/night cycle.
Feeding primarily involves filter-feeding on phytoplankton and suspended organic matter. Supplementation with liquid phytoplankton or microalgae may be necessary in tanks with low natural productivity. They are peaceful invertebrates and compatible with most reef-safe species, though care should be taken to avoid predatory fish or invertebrates that may nip at their mantles.
Placement: Attach clusters securely to rockwork or substrate where moderate flow is present but not too strong to dislodge them. Avoid areas with excessive sediment accumulation to prevent clogging of their filtering apparatus.
Regular monitoring of water quality and occasional cleaning of detritus around the mussels will help maintain their health and filtration efficiency. These bivalves can grow to a moderate size, so ensure adequate space is available for cluster expansion.
