Oxypora spp. are visually striking large polyp stony (LPS) corals belonging to the family Pectiniidae. Known for their vibrant colours and textured appearance, these corals make a captivating addition to mature reef aquariums.
Lighting: Moderate to high lighting is recommended to maintain optimal coloration and health. LED, T5, or metal halide lighting systems are suitable, but avoid sudden intense light exposure to prevent bleaching.
Water Flow: Moderate, indirect water flow is ideal. Strong direct currents can damage the delicate polyps, while stagnant water may encourage detritus buildup.
Placement: Position Oxypora spp. on stable rockwork in mid to lower sections of the aquarium. Ensure adequate spacing from neighbouring corals to prevent aggressive interactions, as they can extend sweeper tentacles.
Care Level: Moderate care requirements. Suitable for aquarists with some experience in maintaining LPS corals.
Diet: Primarily photosynthetic via symbiotic zooxanthellae, but benefit from supplemental feeding of meaty foods such as mysis shrimp or specialised coral foods 1-2 times per week.
Compatibility: Reef safe with adequate spacing. Avoid placing near aggressive corals or those with strong stinging capabilities.
Regular water parameter monitoring and stable conditions are essential for long-term health. Maintain calcium, alkalinity, and magnesium within recommended ranges for stony corals.
