Odontodactylus spp. are captivating mantis shrimps known for their vibrant colours and impressive hunting abilities. This medium-sized specimen is suitable for marine aquariums with experienced keepers who can provide secure housing and appropriate care.
Feeding: These mantis shrimps are carnivorous predators that require a diet of meaty foods such as crustaceans, molluscs, and frozen marine preparations. Feeding should be regular but not excessive to maintain health.
Compatibility: Odontodactylus spp. are aggressive and territorial. They should be housed singly or with very robust tank mates that cannot be harmed by their powerful claws. Avoid keeping with small or delicate invertebrates and fish.
Reef Safety: With Caution. While they may coexist in reef tanks, they can damage corals and other invertebrates by their burrowing and predatory behaviour.
Special Care: Provide a tank with plenty of live rock or stable substrate for burrowing. A secure lid is essential to prevent escape. Maintain stable water parameters typical of marine reef systems.
Tank Requirements: A minimum tank size of 75 litres is recommended to provide sufficient space and reduce stress.
Lighting & Water Flow: Standard reef lighting and moderate water flow are suitable, ensuring the mantis shrimp can thrive without excessive disturbance.
