Odontodactylus scyllarus, commonly known as the Peacock Mantis Shrimp, is a visually stunning and highly active marine invertebrate prized by experienced aquarists. This pair is available in various sizes, allowing hobbyists to select specimens that best suit their aquarium setup.
Care and Husbandry: Peacock Mantis Shrimp require a well-established marine aquarium with plenty of live rock to provide natural burrowing sites. A minimum tank size of 75 litres is recommended to accommodate their territorial nature and active behaviour. They are carnivorous and thrive on a diet of meaty foods such as frozen shrimp, fish, and molluscs. Feeding should be done regularly but avoid overfeeding to maintain water quality.
Compatibility and Reef Safety: These mantis shrimps are predatory and can be aggressive towards tank mates, especially smaller or slow-moving invertebrates and fish. They are best kept either singly or as a bonded pair in a species-specific tank or with robust tank mates that can tolerate their presence. Due to their powerful raptorial appendages, they can damage or kill other invertebrates, so reef safety is classified as With Caution.
Environmental Requirements: Maintain stable water parameters typical of a marine reef aquarium: temperature 24-27°C, salinity 1.023-1.025 SG, pH 8.1-8.4. Moderate water flow is preferred to mimic their natural habitat without causing stress. Lighting requirements are standard for marine invertebrates and should not be excessive.
Additional Notes: Handle with care during maintenance, as their strike can cause injury. Providing ample hiding places and substrate for burrowing will help reduce stress and encourage natural behaviours.
