The Yellowtail Snapper (Ocyurus chrysurus) is a popular choice among marine aquarium enthusiasts due to its vibrant colours and manageable size. This medium-sized, tank-bred specimen offers a sustainable and hardy option for hobbyists seeking a peaceful yet active fish to enhance their reef or fish-only setups.
Appearance: Characterised by its bright yellow tail and a streamlined body with a distinctive yellow stripe running along its sides, the Yellowtail Snapper adds a splash of colour and movement to your aquarium.
Temperament and Compatibility: Generally peaceful, this species coexists well with other non-aggressive fish. It is best kept with similarly sized or larger tank mates to avoid stress or bullying. Avoid housing with very small or timid species that may be outcompeted for food.
Diet: Omnivorous by nature, the Yellowtail Snapper thrives on a varied diet including high-quality marine pellets, frozen mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, and finely chopped seafood. Regular feeding 1-2 times daily is recommended to maintain optimal health.
Tank Requirements: A minimum tank size of 180 litres (approximately 50 gallons) is advised to provide ample swimming space. Stable water parameters with a temperature range of 24-27°C, salinity of 1.023-1.025 SG, and good water quality are essential.
Reef Compatibility: With Caution. While generally reef safe, some individuals may nip at smaller invertebrates or sessile animals. Monitor behaviour closely if housed in reef aquariums.
Additional Care: Provide plenty of hiding spots and open swimming areas. Regular water changes and maintaining excellent filtration will support the health and longevity of this species.
