The Naso lituratus, often called the Naso Tang or Lipstick Tang, is a popular choice among marine aquarium enthusiasts due to its vibrant orange lips, striking body pattern, and graceful swimming behaviour. This large tang species is best suited for well-established, spacious marine tanks.
Care Level: Moderate to advanced. Requires stable water conditions and ample swimming space.
Temperament: Generally peaceful but can be territorial towards other tangs, especially conspecifics. Best kept singly or in a very large tank with multiple tangs.
Diet: Primarily herbivorous. Feed a varied diet rich in marine algae and seaweed, supplemented with high-quality frozen or prepared foods to ensure balanced nutrition.
Minimum Tank Size: At least 180 litres (approximately 50 gallons) to accommodate its active swimming nature and adult size.
Reef Safety: With Caution. May nip at some sessile invertebrates and soft corals; monitor behaviour closely in reef setups.
Lighting & Water Flow: Standard reef lighting and moderate to strong water flow to mimic natural habitat conditions.
Placement: Provide plenty of open swimming space with live rock for grazing and hiding. Avoid overcrowding to reduce stress and aggression.
Origin: Indo-Pacific region.
Maximum Size: Up to 40 cm (approximately 16 inches) in length.
Regular water changes and stable water parameters are essential for maintaining health. This species benefits from a well-established aquarium with mature biological filtration.
