Myripristis kuntee is a captivating medium-sized squirrelfish prized for its vibrant red hues and distinctive large eyes adapted for nocturnal activity. This species is best suited for marine aquarium enthusiasts with some experience, as it requires specific husbandry conditions to thrive.
In the aquarium, Myripristis kuntee prefers dimly lit environments with ample rockwork and caves to retreat into during daylight hours. Being nocturnal, it is most active at night, feeding primarily on small crustaceans and planktonic foods. A varied diet including frozen mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, and high-quality marine pellets is recommended to maintain optimal health.
Temperamentally, this squirrelfish is generally peaceful but can be shy and may hide frequently. It is compatible with other non-aggressive tank mates but should not be housed with very small fish or invertebrates that it might prey upon. A minimum tank size of 150 litres is advised to provide sufficient swimming space and territory.
Water parameters should be stable, with a temperature range of 24-27°C, salinity between 1.023-1.025 SG, and moderate water flow. Lighting should be subdued to mimic natural crepuscular conditions, enhancing the fish’s comfort and natural behaviour.
Overall, Myripristis kuntee makes a striking addition to a mature marine aquarium, offering nocturnal interest and vibrant colouration when cared for appropriately.
