Mycedium spp. are large polyp stony (LPS) corals belonging to the family Pectiniidae, prized for their vibrant colours and distinctive, textured appearance. This Extra Large specimen offers a dramatic focal point for mature reef tanks.
Lighting: Moderate lighting is recommended to maintain vibrant colours without causing bleaching. LED or T5 lighting systems with adjustable intensity work well.
Water Flow: Provide gentle to moderate water movement to ensure adequate gas exchange and prevent sediment accumulation on the coral surface.
Placement: Position Mycedium spp. on stable rockwork in mid to lower areas of the aquarium. Allow ample space around the coral to prevent aggression or damage to neighbouring corals, as it can extend sweeper tentacles.
Care Level: Suitable for intermediate to advanced hobbyists due to its size and specific husbandry needs.
Diet: Primarily photosynthetic via symbiotic zooxanthellae, but benefits from occasional feeding of meaty foods such as mysis shrimp or specialised coral foods to promote growth.
Compatibility: Reef safe with caution; maintain adequate spacing from other corals to avoid stinging interactions.
Additional Notes: Regular water parameter monitoring is essential to maintain stable conditions. Avoid sudden changes in lighting or flow to reduce stress.
