Moringua microchir is a fascinating species of slender moray eel known for its burrowing behaviour and elongated body. This eel is best suited for marine aquarists with some experience due to its specialised care requirements and shy temperament.
Care Level: Moderate to advanced. This species requires stable water parameters and a secure aquarium setup.
Temperament and Compatibility: Generally shy and reclusive, Moringua microchir spends much of its time hidden within the substrate or rockwork. It is best kept with peaceful tankmates that will not outcompete it for food or harass it. Avoid housing with very small fish or invertebrates that may be seen as prey.
Diet: Carnivorous. Feed a varied diet of meaty foods such as chopped seafood, crustaceans, and specialised frozen preparations. Feeding should be done in the evening or at night to mimic natural feeding times.
Tank Requirements: A minimum tank size of 120 litres is recommended to provide sufficient space and hiding places. The aquarium should have a deep sand bed or fine substrate to allow burrowing, along with plenty of live rock for shelter. A tight-fitting lid is essential as moray eels are known escape artists.
Water Parameters: Maintain stable marine conditions with temperature between 24-27°C, salinity at 1.023-1.025 SG, pH 8.1-8.4, and moderate water flow.
Origin: Not Provided.
Maximum Size: Typically grows up to 30 cm in length.
Reef Compatibility: With Caution. Due to its carnivorous diet and burrowing habits, it may disturb invertebrates and small fish in reef tanks.
