Lysiosquillina maculata, also known as the Zebra Mantis Shrimp, is a striking and powerful predatory crustacean prized by advanced marine aquarium enthusiasts. This species is notable for its impressive size and unique hunting behaviour, making it a captivating addition to suitably equipped marine tanks.
Care Level: Advanced. This mantis shrimp requires a secure, well-maintained aquarium with stable water parameters and ample hiding spaces.
Feeding: Carnivorous. Feed a diet of meaty marine foods such as live or frozen crustaceans, fish, and molluscs. Regular feeding 3-4 times per week is recommended to maintain health.
Compatibility: Not reef safe. Due to its predatory nature, Lysiosquillina maculata may prey on tank mates including fish, invertebrates, and corals. It is best kept in a species-specific or predator-only setup.
Tank Requirements: Minimum tank size of 180 litres (approximately 50 gallons) is advised to provide sufficient space. A sandy substrate with deep burrowing areas is essential, as this species constructs extensive burrows for shelter and hunting.
Lighting and Water Flow: Moderate lighting and gentle to moderate water flow are suitable, replicating natural reef or sandy lagoon environments.
Placement: Provide a quiet area with ample substrate depth for burrowing. Avoid placing near delicate or slow-moving species.
Origin: Indo-Pacific region.
Maximum Size: Up to 30 cm (12 inches) in length.
Due to its specialised care needs and predatory behaviour, Lysiosquillina maculata is recommended for experienced marine aquarists only. Proper tank security is essential to prevent escape or injury.
