Lobophyllia rowleyensis (Red) is a captivating large polyp stony (LPS) coral prized for its vivid red hues and fleshy, lobed polyps. Originating from Indo-Pacific reefs, this coral adds a dramatic splash of colour and texture to mature reef aquariums.
Lighting: Moderate lighting is ideal, such as LED or T5 fixtures providing 100-200 PAR. Avoid intense direct light to prevent bleaching.
Water Flow: Moderate, indirect water flow is recommended to ensure adequate gas exchange and nutrient delivery without damaging the delicate polyps.
Placement: Position on the substrate or lower to mid-level rockwork with ample space around it. This coral can extend sweeper tentacles, so maintain at least 10cm clearance from neighbouring corals to prevent aggression.
Care Level: Moderate. Suitable for aquarists with some experience in maintaining stable water parameters and consistent feeding routines.
Diet: Primarily photosynthetic via symbiotic zooxanthellae but benefits from supplemental feeding of meaty foods such as mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, or specialised coral foods 1-2 times weekly.
Compatibility: Reef safe with adequate spacing. Avoid placing near aggressive corals or fast-growing SPS species.
Water Parameters: Maintain stable reef conditions: temperature 24-27°C, salinity 1.023-1.025, pH 8.1-8.4, calcium 400-450 ppm, alkalinity 8-12 dKH, magnesium 1250-1350 ppm.
This large Lobophyllia rowleyensis makes a stunning focal point in a mature reef aquarium, rewarding keepers with its bold colour and dynamic polyp extension.
