The Hogfish (Lachnolaimus maximus) is a distinctive wrasse native to the western Atlantic Ocean, prized in marine aquaria for its unique elongated snout and striking colouration. Our large tank-bred specimens ensure healthier, more adaptable fish suitable for captive care.
Care Level: Moderate to advanced. Hogfish require stable water conditions and a well-established aquarium.
Temperament and Compatibility: Generally peaceful but may exhibit territorial behaviour, especially towards smaller or similar-shaped fish. Best housed with other semi-aggressive or robust species. Avoid keeping with very small or timid fish.
Diet: Carnivorous. Feed a varied diet including meaty foods such as mysis shrimp, chopped seafood, and specialised marine pellets to ensure optimal health.
Minimum Tank Size: Due to their active swimming and potential size, a minimum of 250 litres (approximately 65 gallons) is recommended to provide ample space.
Lighting and Water Flow: Standard marine aquarium lighting is suitable. Moderate water flow mimicking natural reef currents is ideal.
Placement: Provide plenty of live rock for hiding and foraging. Ensure open swimming areas to accommodate their active nature.
Origin: Western Atlantic Ocean (wild origin not provided for tank-bred specimens).
Maximum Size: Up to 60 cm (24 inches) in captivity.
Tank-bred Hogfish are a premium choice for experienced marine aquarists seeking a visually impressive and engaging wrasse. Their care requires attention to diet, tank size, and compatibility to thrive in a home aquarium.
