Inimicus didactylus is a captivating medium-sized scorpionfish species prized for its remarkable camouflage and distinctive method of movement, using two specialised pectoral fin rays to ‘walk’ along the substrate. This species is venomous and should be handled with care, making it suitable primarily for experienced marine aquarists.
Care Level: Moderate to advanced due to venomous spines and specific dietary needs.
Temperament: Generally solitary and sedentary; can be territorial towards similar species.
Diet: Carnivorous – primarily feeds on small fish and crustaceans. In captivity, offer a diet of live or frozen meaty foods such as mysis shrimp, chopped seafood, and occasionally small feeder fish.
Minimum Tank Size: At least 120 litres (approximately 30 gallons) to provide adequate space and maintain water quality.
Lighting Requirements: Moderate lighting to mimic natural reef or sandy environments.
Water Flow: Low to moderate water movement to replicate natural habitat conditions.
Placement: Best placed on sandy or rubble substrates with ample hiding spots such as rocks or caves. Ensure the tank is well-established with stable water parameters.
Origin: Indo-Pacific region.
Maximum Size: Up to 20 cm (approximately 8 inches).
Due to its venomous spines, care should be taken when performing maintenance or handling this fish. It is not reef safe as it may prey on small invertebrates and fish. Compatibility with other species should be carefully considered, avoiding smaller or slow-moving tankmates.
