Holocentrus rufus, commonly known as the Squirrelfish, is a captivating nocturnal species prized for its vibrant red coloration and distinctive large eyes. This fish is best suited for marine aquarists with some experience due to its specific care requirements and temperament.

Care Level: Moderate to Advanced. Requires stable water parameters and a mature aquarium environment.

Temperament: Generally peaceful but can be territorial towards conspecifics or similar species. Best kept singly or in a large tank if multiple individuals are desired.

Diet: Carnivorous. Feeds primarily on meaty foods such as mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, and finely chopped seafood. Feeding should be done in the evening to match natural nocturnal feeding habits.

Minimum Tank Size: A minimum of 120 litres (approximately 30 gallons) is recommended to provide sufficient swimming space and territory.

Reef Safety: With Caution. While generally reef safe, Holocentrus rufus may prey on small invertebrates and should be introduced carefully into reef setups.

Lighting Requirements: Moderate lighting is suitable, with dimmer conditions preferred during the evening to mimic natural habitat.

Water Flow: Moderate water flow is ideal to simulate natural reef environments.
