The Clarion Angelfish (Holacanthus clarionensis) is a visually captivating species native to the eastern Pacific Ocean, prized for its vivid orange and blue markings. This large, tank-bred specimen is ideal for marine aquarists seeking a showpiece fish with a moderate to high care level.
Care Level: Moderate to High – Due to its size and specific dietary needs, this angelfish is best suited for experienced hobbyists.
Temperament: Semi-aggressive. It can be territorial, especially towards other angelfish or similar species, so careful tankmate selection is essential.
Diet: Omnivorous. Provide a varied diet including marine algae, spirulina, high-quality angelfish preparations, mysis shrimp, and other meaty foods to ensure optimal health and vibrant colouration.
Minimum Tank Size: 250 litres (approximately 65 gallons) or larger to accommodate its active swimming behaviour and territorial nature.
Lighting Requirements: Moderate lighting is sufficient, replicating natural reef conditions without excessive intensity.
Water Flow: Moderate water movement to mimic natural habitats and maintain water quality.
Placement: Provide plenty of live rock for grazing and hiding places to reduce stress and territorial disputes.
Origin: Eastern Pacific Ocean, particularly around the Revillagigedo Islands (Clarion Island).
Maximum Size: Up to 30 cm (12 inches) in length.
Due to its territorial tendencies, it is recommended to keep this angelfish singly or as a mated pair in a suitably large aquarium. Regular water changes and stable water parameters are crucial for long-term health.
