Holacanthus africanus, commonly known as the African Angelfish, is a captivating marine fish prized for its bold colours and distinctive markings. This medium-sized angelfish is a stunning addition to large, well-established marine aquariums.
Care Level: Moderate to advanced. This species requires stable water parameters and a spacious environment.
Temperament and Compatibility: The African Angelfish is semi-aggressive and territorial, especially towards other angelfish and similar-shaped species. It is best kept singly or as a mated pair in a tank with plenty of hiding places and visual barriers. Avoid housing with very small or timid fish.
Diet: Omnivorous. Provide a varied diet including high-quality marine angelfish pellets, frozen mysis shrimp, spirulina, and marine algae. Supplement with sponge-based foods to mimic natural feeding habits.
Minimum Tank Size: At least 200 litres (approximately 50 gallons) to allow adequate swimming space and territory establishment.
Lighting and Water Flow: Standard marine aquarium lighting is sufficient. Moderate water flow is ideal to simulate natural reef conditions without stressing the fish.
Placement: Provide plenty of live rock for grazing and shelter. Position the fish in a well-structured reef or rockscape to reduce stress and aggression.
Origin: West African coastal waters.
Maximum Size: Up to 30 cm (12 inches) in length.
