Hippocampus reidi, commonly known as the Yellow Longsnout Seahorse, is a captivating species prized for its vibrant yellow colouration and delicate appearance. This tank-bred variety ensures healthier specimens with improved acclimation to captive conditions, making them an excellent choice for dedicated marine aquarists.
Temperament and Compatibility: These seahorses are peaceful and slow-moving, best kept singly or in pairs. They are compatible with other non-aggressive tank mates but should not be housed with fast or aggressive fish that may outcompete them for food.
Diet: Hippocampus reidi require a specialised diet primarily consisting of live or frozen mysis shrimp. Feeding should be frequent, ideally two to three times daily, to meet their nutritional needs.
Tank Requirements: A minimum tank size of 75 litres is recommended to provide adequate swimming space and stable water parameters. The aquarium should have gentle water flow to prevent stress and include plenty of hitching posts such as macroalgae, branching corals, or artificial structures to allow the seahorses to anchor themselves.
Water Parameters and Lighting: Maintain stable marine conditions with temperature between 23-26°C, salinity at 1.020-1.025 SG, and moderate lighting suitable for any live plants or corals present. Moderate water flow is ideal to mimic their natural environment without causing undue stress.
Origin: Tank-bred specimens, originally derived from wild populations in the Western Atlantic, including the Caribbean.
Maximum Size: Up to 15 cm in length.
With proper care, the Yellow Hippocampus reidi can be a stunning and rewarding addition to a specialised marine aquarium.
