Hippocampus kuda, commonly known as the yellow or spotted seahorse, is a captivating addition to any marine aquarium. This medium-sized seahorse is admired for its distinctive shape and slow, deliberate movements, making it a fascinating species to observe.
Care Level: Moderate to advanced. Seahorses require stable water conditions and specialised feeding routines.
Temperament and Compatibility: Hippocampus kuda is peaceful and non-aggressive. It is best housed with other gentle species that will not outcompete it for food. Avoid fast or aggressive tankmates.
Diet: Primarily carnivorous, feeding on live or frozen mysis shrimp and other small crustaceans. Frequent, small feedings throughout the day are recommended to meet their nutritional needs.
Minimum Tank Size: A minimum of 75 litres (approximately 20 gallons) is advised to provide ample swimming space and stable water parameters.
Water Parameters: Maintain temperature between 24-27°C, salinity at 1.020-1.025 SG, and stable pH around 8.1-8.4. Moderate water flow is preferred to mimic natural habitats without stressing the seahorse.
Lighting and Placement: Moderate lighting is suitable. Provide plenty of hitching posts such as macroalgae, gorgonians, or artificial decor to allow the seahorse to anchor itself.
Origin: Native to the Indo-Pacific region, Hippocampus kuda is often collected from coastal reefs and seagrass beds.
Maximum Size: Typically grows up to 15 cm in length.
With attentive care and a peaceful tank environment, Hippocampus kuda can thrive and become a unique focal point in your marine aquarium.
