Heniochus intermedius, commonly known as the Intermediate Butterflyfish, is a captivating addition to any large marine aquarium. Recognised for its distinctive black and white banding and elongated dorsal fin, this species adds elegance and movement to reef setups.
Care Level: Moderate to advanced. This species thrives best in established tanks with stable water parameters.
Temperament: Generally peaceful but may show territorial behaviour towards conspecifics or similar-shaped butterflyfish. Best kept singly or as a mated pair.
Diet: Omnivorous. Requires a varied diet including marine algae, high-quality frozen foods such as mysis and brine shrimp, and specialised prepared diets to ensure optimal health.
Minimum Tank Size: 180 litres (approximately 50 gallons) or larger to provide ample swimming space and reduce territorial stress.
Reef Compatibility: With Caution. While generally reef safe, they may nip at coral polyps or clam mantles, so monitoring is advised.
Lighting and Water Flow: Standard reef lighting and moderate water flow are suitable to mimic their natural environment.
Placement: Provide plenty of live rock for grazing and hiding spots. Ensure open swimming areas to accommodate their active nature.
Origin: Indo-Pacific region.
Maximum Size: Up to 20 cm (8 inches) in length.
Heniochus intermedius is a stunning species that, with proper care, can thrive in a well-maintained marine aquarium, offering both beauty and interest to experienced hobbyists.
