The Brownbanded Bamboo Shark (Hemiscyllium ocellatum) is a fascinating and peaceful species native to the Indo-Pacific region. This tank-bred small specimen is well-suited for marine aquarists with experience in shark husbandry, offering a unique addition to larger reef or fish-only aquariums.
Care Level: Moderate to advanced. Requires stable water parameters and a suitably sized tank.
Temperament: Generally peaceful and nocturnal, this species is best kept with non-aggressive tank mates. Avoid housing with very small fish that may be seen as prey.
Diet: Carnivorous. Feed a varied diet of meaty foods such as shrimp, squid, and specialised shark pellets. Feeding should be done in the evening to match their natural nocturnal behaviour.
Minimum Tank Size: At least 180 litres (approximately 50 gallons) for a small individual, with larger tanks preferred as the shark grows.
Reef Safety: With Caution. While generally reef safe, they may disturb small invertebrates and should be monitored in reef setups.
Lighting Requirements: Moderate lighting is sufficient, reflecting their preference for dimmer environments.
Water Flow: Moderate water flow mimicking natural reef conditions is ideal.
Placement: Provide ample hiding places such as caves and rockwork to replicate their natural habitat and reduce stress.
Origin: Indo-Pacific region.
Maximum Size: Up to 90 cm (approximately 35 inches) in captivity, though growth rates vary.
Tank-bred specimens like this one offer improved acclimation to aquarium life and reduced impact on wild populations. Regular water quality monitoring and a secure tank lid are essential to prevent escape, as these sharks are known to be active and curious.
