Hemigymnus fasciatus, commonly known as the Banded Wrasse, is a visually captivating marine fish prized for its bold banded markings and dynamic behaviour. This species is best suited for larger, well-established aquariums due to its size and activity level.
Care Level: Moderate to Advanced. This wrasse requires stable water conditions and a suitably large environment to exhibit natural behaviours.
Temperament and Compatibility: The Banded Wrasse is generally semi-aggressive and can be territorial, especially towards similar species or smaller, more passive tankmates. It is recommended to keep this fish with other robust species and avoid housing with very small or timid fish.
Diet: Hemigymnus fasciatus is carnivorous and thrives on a varied diet including meaty foods such as mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, chopped seafood, and specialised marine pellets. Regular feeding of high-quality protein-rich foods supports vibrant colouration and health.
Tank Requirements: A minimum tank size of 180 litres (approximately 50 gallons) is advised to accommodate the active swimming behaviour and territorial needs of this species. Provide ample live rock for hiding and foraging opportunities.
Water Parameters: Maintain stable marine conditions with temperature between 24-27°C, pH 8.1-8.4, and salinity at 1.020-1.025 SG. Moderate water flow and good filtration are essential to keep the environment clean and oxygenated.
Reef Compatibility: With Caution. While not inherently destructive to corals, the Banded Wrasse may disturb invertebrates or small fish. Careful monitoring and tank setup adjustments are recommended in reef systems.
Origin: Indo-Pacific region.
Maximum Size: Up to 30 cm (12 inches) in length.
