Haemulon sciurus, commonly known as the Bluestriped Grunt, is a visually striking snapper species prized in the marine aquarium hobby. This tank-bred specimen is offered in a small size, making it suitable for aquarists looking to add a peaceful yet active fish to their community tank.
Temperament and Compatibility: Haemulon sciurus is generally peaceful and can coexist with a variety of other non-aggressive marine species. It is best kept with similarly sized or larger tank mates to avoid stress or bullying. Avoid housing with very small or timid fish.
Diet: This species is carnivorous and thrives on a varied diet including high-quality frozen or live meaty foods such as brine shrimp, mysis shrimp, and finely chopped seafood. Supplement with marine pellets or flakes formulated for carnivorous fish to ensure balanced nutrition.
Tank Requirements: A minimum tank size of 150 litres (approximately 40 gallons) is recommended to provide adequate swimming space and maintain water quality. Stable water parameters with a temperature range of 24-27°C, salinity of 1.020-1.025, and pH between 8.1 and 8.4 are ideal.
Reef Compatibility: Reef safe with caution. While generally peaceful, Haemulon sciurus may occasionally nip at small invertebrates or sessile animals. Monitor behaviour closely if housed in reef setups.
Additional Care: Provide moderate water flow and moderate lighting to mimic natural conditions. Include plenty of rockwork or caves to offer shelter and resting spots.
