The Bluestriped Grunt (Haemulon sciurus) is a visually captivating snapper species, prized for its vivid blue horizontal stripes and peaceful temperament. This large tank-bred specimen offers aquarists a sustainable and hardy choice for their marine aquarium.
Temperament and Compatibility: Generally peaceful, the Bluestriped Grunt is best kept in groups or schools to mimic natural behaviour. It coexists well with other non-aggressive fish species but may show mild territoriality in confined spaces. Avoid housing with very small or timid fish to prevent stress.
Diet: Omnivorous by nature, this species thrives on a varied diet including high-quality marine pellets, frozen mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, and finely chopped seafood. Regular feeding 2-3 times daily supports optimal health.
Tank Requirements: A minimum tank size of 180 litres (approximately 50 gallons) is recommended to provide ample swimming space. The aquarium should feature open swimming areas complemented by rockwork or coral structures for shelter.
Water Parameters: Maintain stable marine conditions with temperature between 24-27°C, salinity at 1.023-1.025 specific gravity, pH 8.1-8.4, and moderate water flow. Regular water changes and excellent filtration are essential to support this species’ health.
Reef Compatibility: With caution. While generally reef safe, the Bluestriped Grunt may occasionally nip at smaller invertebrates or corals, especially if underfed or stressed.
Choosing a tank-bred specimen ensures better acclimation to aquarium life, reduces wild collection impact, and often results in a healthier, more robust fish.
