Haemulon sciurus, commonly called the Blue-striped Grunt, is a visually striking marine fish prized for its vibrant blue stripes and schooling nature. This species is a member of the snapper family and is best suited for experienced hobbyists with adequately sized marine aquariums.
Temperament and Compatibility: The Blue-striped Grunt is generally peaceful and can be kept in community tanks with other non-aggressive species. It is best housed in groups to mimic natural schooling behaviour, which helps reduce stress and encourages natural activity. Avoid housing with overly aggressive or much larger predatory fish.
Diet: Haemulon sciurus is carnivorous and thrives on a varied diet including high-quality frozen or live meaty foods such as mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, and finely chopped seafood. Supplementing with marine pellets or flakes designed for carnivorous fish is recommended to ensure balanced nutrition.
Tank Requirements: A minimum tank size of 180 litres (approximately 50 gallons) is recommended to provide ample swimming space. The aquarium should be well-established with stable water parameters, moderate water flow, and plenty of hiding places created by live rock or artificial structures.
Reef Compatibility: This species is considered reef safe with caution. While generally not aggressive towards corals, it may occasionally disturb small invertebrates or sessile organisms. Monitor behaviour closely in reef setups.
Care Level: Moderate. Requires stable water quality and a consistent feeding routine.
Water Parameters: Maintain temperature between 24-27°C, salinity at 1.020-1.025 SG, pH 8.1-8.4, and good water quality with regular water changes.
