The French Grunt (Haemulon flavolineatum) is a striking snapper species prized for its vibrant yellow stripes and peaceful temperament. This extra large, tank-bred specimen is an excellent choice for marine aquarists looking to add a schooling fish that thrives in well-established reef or fish-only systems.
Temperament and Compatibility: Generally peaceful, the French Grunt is best kept in groups of at least 5 to encourage natural schooling behaviour. It coexists well with other non-aggressive species but may become territorial if kept singly or in insufficient numbers.
Diet: Omnivorous, this species accepts a varied diet including high-quality frozen or live meaty foods such as brine shrimp, mysis shrimp, and finely chopped seafood, supplemented with marine flake or pellet foods.
Tank Requirements: A minimum tank size of 250 litres is recommended to provide ample swimming space. The aquarium should be mature with stable water parameters and plenty of hiding places created by live rock.
Reef Compatibility: Reef safe with caution. While generally peaceful, the French Grunt may occasionally nip at small invertebrates or sessile corals, so monitoring is advised.
Care Level: Moderate. Suitable for aquarists with some marine experience due to size and schooling needs.
