Genicanthus semifasciatus, commonly known as the Japanese Swallowtail Angelfish, is a visually stunning species prized for its elegant colouration and peaceful nature. The male displays distinctive markings and vibrant hues, making it a captivating addition to mature marine aquariums.
Care Level: Moderate care is recommended. This species thrives best in well-established tanks with stable water parameters.
Temperament: Generally peaceful and suitable for community tanks with other non-aggressive fish. Males may show mild territorial behaviour towards conspecifics.
Diet: Omnivorous. Provide a varied diet including high-quality marine angelfish pellets, frozen mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, and marine algae to ensure optimal health.
Minimum Tank Size: A minimum of 180 litres (approximately 40 gallons) is advised to provide ample swimming space and reduce stress.
Reef Safety: With caution. While generally considered reef safe, they may nip at sessile invertebrates or coral polyps occasionally.
Lighting and Water Flow: Standard marine aquarium lighting and moderate water flow are suitable. Avoid overly strong currents to allow natural swimming behaviour.
Placement: Mid to upper levels of the aquarium where they can swim freely and display their colours.
Origin: Native to the Western Pacific, particularly around Japan and nearby waters.
Maximum Size: Up to 20 cm (approximately 8 inches) in length.
Ensure stable water conditions with temperature between 24-27°C, salinity of 1.020-1.025 SG, and regular water changes. Suitable tank mates include other peaceful marine fish such as tangs, wrasses, and gobies.
