Galaxea spp. are large polyp stony (LPS) corals belonging to the Oculinidae family, prized for their striking appearance and textured polyps. These corals are suitable for marine aquarium enthusiasts with some experience in LPS coral husbandry.
Lighting: Moderate to high lighting is recommended to support their photosynthetic needs. LED or T5 lighting systems that provide a balanced spectrum work well.
Water Flow: Moderate water flow is ideal to ensure adequate gas exchange and to prevent detritus accumulation without causing tissue damage.
Placement: Position Galaxea spp. in a stable location with enough space to accommodate their long, sweeping polyps. Avoid placing them too close to neighbouring corals to prevent aggressive interactions, as they can extend sweeper tentacles.
Care: Maintain stable water parameters typical for reef aquaria: temperature 24-27°C, salinity 1.023-1.025, pH 8.1-8.4, and low nutrient levels. Regular feeding with meaty foods such as mysis shrimp or specialised coral foods can enhance growth and colouration.
Compatibility: Reef safe with caution. Galaxea spp. may exhibit aggressive behaviour towards nearby corals, so adequate spacing is essential to prevent damage.
Origin and Size: Origin is not provided; as a genus-level specimen, conservative husbandry is advised. The ‘Tiny’ variant indicates a small-sized specimen suitable for gradual growth in home reef tanks.
