The Fungia spp. (Oval Orange) is a solitary large polyp stony (LPS) coral prized for its vibrant orange hues and distinctive oval shape. This medium-sized specimen adds a bold splash of colour and texture to mature reef aquariums.
Care Level: Moderate. Fungia corals require stable water parameters and moderate lighting to thrive. They are best suited for aquarists with some experience in maintaining LPS corals.
Lighting Requirements: Moderate lighting is recommended, such as LED or T5 fixtures providing a PAR range of approximately 50-150. Avoid intense direct light to prevent bleaching.
Water Flow: Moderate, indirect water flow is ideal. Strong currents can cause tissue damage, while stagnant water may lead to detritus accumulation.
Placement: Place on sandy or rubble substrate rather than rockwork, allowing the coral to rest naturally. Ensure adequate spacing from neighbouring corals to prevent aggression and allow full expansion.
Diet: Primarily photosynthetic via symbiotic zooxanthellae, but benefits from occasional feeding of meaty foods such as brine shrimp, mysis shrimp, or specialised coral foods to support growth and colour.
Compatibility & Reef Safety: Yes, with adequate spacing. Fungia spp. can extend sweeper tentacles and may sting nearby corals if placed too closely.
Additional Notes: This coral is a solitary polyp and can move slowly across the substrate. Regular monitoring and gentle handling during maintenance are advised to avoid damage.
