Euphyllia glabrescens (Hellfire) is a captivating large polyp stony (LPS) coral renowned for its fiery orange to red tentacles that create a dramatic display in reef aquariums. This small specimen offers a manageable size for hobbyists looking to add vibrant movement and colour to their marine setups.
Lighting: Moderate to high lighting is recommended to maintain optimal health and coloration. LED, T5, or metal halide lighting systems are suitable, but avoid sudden intense light changes to prevent stress.
Water Flow: Moderate, indirect water flow is ideal. Strong currents can cause the delicate tentacles to retract or become damaged, while too little flow may lead to detritus accumulation.
Placement: Position this coral in the middle to lower regions of the tank where it can extend its tentacles freely without touching neighbouring corals. Adequate spacing is essential to prevent aggressive interactions, as Euphyllia species possess sweeper tentacles that can sting nearby corals.
Care Level: Moderate. Suitable for aquarists with some experience in LPS coral husbandry. Regular water parameter monitoring and stable conditions are crucial.
Diet: Primarily photosynthetic via symbiotic zooxanthellae, but benefits from occasional feeding of small meaty foods such as brine shrimp, mysis shrimp, or specialised coral foods to promote growth and vibrancy.
Compatibility: Reef safe with adequate spacing. Avoid placing near aggressive corals or those sensitive to stinging tentacles.
Additional Notes: Maintain stable water parameters typical for reef tanks: temperature 24-26°C, salinity 1.023-1.025, pH 8.1-8.4, and low nutrient levels. Regular calcium and alkalinity supplementation supports skeletal growth.
