Equetus acuminatus, commonly referred to as the Spotted Drum, is a captivating marine fish prized for its bold black and white vertical stripes and elegant, elongated dorsal fin. This medium-sized species can reach up to 25 cm in length and is best suited to well-established marine aquariums with a minimum volume of 180 litres.
Temperament and Compatibility: Generally peaceful, the Spotted Drum can be kept with other non-aggressive tank mates. It is advisable to avoid housing with overly aggressive species to reduce stress. This fish may be shy initially but will become more confident as it acclimates.
Diet: Equetus acuminatus is carnivorous and thrives on a varied diet including meaty foods such as mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, finely chopped seafood, and high-quality marine pellets or flakes. Feeding should be done 1-2 times daily to maintain optimal health.
Tank Setup and Care: Provide plenty of live rock for hiding and grazing, as well as open swimming areas. Moderate water flow and stable water parameters are essential, with temperature maintained between 24-27°C, salinity at 1.023-1.025 SG, and pH between 8.1 and 8.4.
Reef Compatibility: With caution. While generally reef safe, some individuals may nip at small invertebrates or sessile invertebrates, so monitoring is recommended.
Equetus acuminatus is a rewarding addition to a marine aquarium for hobbyists seeking a visually striking and moderately challenging species.
