The Giant Grouper (Epinephelus lanceolatus) is one of the largest and most impressive groupers available for marine aquariums. This medium-sized, tank-bred specimen offers a unique opportunity for advanced hobbyists to keep a robust and charismatic predator in a controlled environment.
Care Level: Advanced – Due to their size and dietary needs, Giant Groupers require experienced care and a suitably large aquarium.
Temperament: Predatory and territorial. They can be aggressive towards smaller fish and invertebrates, so tank mates should be chosen carefully.
Diet: Carnivorous. Feed a varied diet of meaty foods such as fish fillets, crustaceans, and specialised marine pellets to ensure optimal health.
Minimum Tank Size: At least 1000 litres (220 gallons) to accommodate their potential growth and swimming needs.
Lighting Requirements: Standard marine aquarium lighting is sufficient; no special lighting is required.
Water Flow: Moderate water flow to mimic natural reef environments without causing stress.
Placement: Provide ample hiding places with robust rockwork and secure tank lids, as groupers are strong and can jump.
Origin: Tank-bred in controlled aquaculture facilities, ensuring healthier specimens and reduced wild collection impact.
Maximum Size: Can grow up to 270 cm in the wild; however, tank specimens typically remain smaller but still require large tanks.
Due to their size and predatory nature, Giant Groupers are best suited for large, species-specific setups or with other large, robust fish. They are not reef safe and will prey on most invertebrates and smaller fish.
