Enoplosus armatus, commonly referred to as the Old Wife, is a temperate marine fish native to southern Australian waters. Known for its distinctive black and white vertical stripes and deep body shape, this species adds a unique visual appeal to temperate marine aquaria.
Care Level: Moderate. This species requires stable temperate water conditions and a well-maintained aquarium.
Temperament: Generally peaceful but can be territorial towards conspecifics or similar-shaped fish. Best kept singly or in a large enough tank to reduce aggression.
Diet: Omnivorous. Accepts a variety of foods including frozen mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, chopped seafood, and high-quality marine pellets or flakes.
Minimum Tank Size: 200 litres. Due to its active swimming behaviour and adult size, a spacious aquarium is recommended.
Water Parameters: Prefers temperate conditions with temperatures between 16-22°C, salinity 1.020-1.025, and stable pH around 8.1-8.4.
Compatibility: Compatible with other temperate species and non-aggressive tank mates. Avoid housing with overly aggressive or much smaller fish.
Reef Safe: With Caution. May nip at invertebrates or sessile animals; not recommended for sensitive reef tanks.
Placement: Mid to lower levels of the aquarium with ample swimming space and hiding spots such as rockwork.
Origin: Temperate waters of southern Australia.
Maximum Size: Up to 30 cm in length.
