Echeneis naucrates, commonly referred to as the Remora, is a distinctive marine fish recognised for its specialised suction disc atop its head, which it uses to attach to larger marine animals such as sharks, turtles, and rays. This fascinating behaviour makes it a unique addition to large marine aquariums.
Care Level: Moderate to advanced. Due to its size and specialised behaviour, it requires a well-established, spacious aquarium.
Temperament: Generally peaceful but may compete for space or food. It is best kept with large, non-aggressive tank mates.
Diet: Carnivorous. In captivity, it accepts a variety of meaty foods including chopped seafood, frozen mysis shrimp, and high-quality marine pellets. Feeding should be frequent and varied to mimic natural feeding habits.
Minimum Tank Size: At least 500 litres (approximately 110 gallons) to accommodate its active swimming and attachment behaviour.
Lighting Requirements: Standard marine aquarium lighting is sufficient; no special lighting needed.
Water Flow: Moderate water flow to simulate natural ocean currents.
Placement: Provide ample open swimming space and large tank mates. Avoid small or aggressive fish that may harass the Remora.
Origin: Tropical and subtropical waters worldwide.
Maximum Size: Up to 90 cm (35 inches) in length in the wild; smaller sizes are common in captivity.
Due to its size and specialised nature, the Echeneis naucrates is recommended for experienced marine aquarists with large, mature systems.
