Echeneis naucrates, commonly referred to as the Remora, is a distinctive large marine fish renowned for its specialised suction disc atop its head, which it uses to attach itself to larger marine animals such as sharks, turtles, and rays. This fascinating behaviour makes it a unique addition to a marine aquarium, though it requires specific husbandry considerations.
Care Level: Moderate to advanced. Due to its size and specialised behaviour, it is recommended for experienced marine aquarists.
Temperament and Compatibility: Generally peaceful but may exhibit opportunistic behaviour. It is best housed with larger, non-aggressive tankmates. Avoid small or delicate species that could be harassed.
Diet: Carnivorous. Echeneis naucrates feeds on scraps and small invertebrates. In captivity, provide a varied diet including chopped seafood, meaty marine preparations, and occasional live or frozen foods such as shrimp and fish pieces.
Minimum Tank Size: Due to its potential size and active swimming behaviour, a minimum tank size of 500 litres is recommended to provide adequate swimming space and water quality stability.
Lighting and Water Flow: Standard marine aquarium lighting is sufficient. Moderate water flow mimicking natural ocean currents is ideal to maintain health and simulate natural conditions.
Placement: Provide open swimming areas and some hiding spots. The fish may attach itself to larger tankmates or aquarium décor using its suction disc.
Origin: Widely distributed in tropical and subtropical oceans worldwide.
Maximum Size: Can grow up to approximately 90 cm in length.
Additional Notes: This species is not commonly kept in home aquaria due to its specialised care requirements and size. It is not reef safe and should not be kept with invertebrates or small fish.
