Discosoma spp. (Spotted) – Large Grade A is a captivating soft coral prized for its vibrant spotted appearance and ease of care, making it an excellent addition to both beginner and experienced marine reef aquarists.
These corals belong to the mushroom coral family and are known for their fleshy, rounded polyps that attach firmly to rockwork. The spotted variety adds unique texture and colour contrast to reef displays.
Care Requirements
- Lighting: Moderate lighting is ideal. Discosoma spp. thrive under LED, T5, or metal halide lighting but avoid intense direct light which can cause bleaching.
- Water Flow: Gentle to moderate water movement is preferred to keep the coral healthy without causing tissue damage.
- Placement: Place on stable rockwork or substrate in shaded or semi-shaded areas of the tank. Ensure adequate spacing from aggressive corals to prevent stinging or overgrowth.
Additional Information
Discosoma spp. are generally hardy and adaptable, making them suitable for a wide range of reef aquarium setups. They are photosynthetic but will benefit from occasional supplemental feeding of microplankton or coral foods.
Regular water parameter maintenance is essential: stable temperature (24-27°C), salinity (1.023-1.025), and low nutrient levels will promote optimal health.
